Summary
Third wave psychotherapies for depression: necessary improvements or the emperor's new clothes?
In this paper the rise of (so-called third generation) therapies is critically discussed. The authors point out that on the one hand these new therapies receive a great deal of attention at congresses, workshops and in the literature, but that on the other hand their empirical support is less convincing. In addition, for methodological reasons it is hardly possible to demonstrate that these new treatments are more effective than the more traditional cognitive and behavioral approaches. The authors make a plea for a research focus on treatments (in particular for depression) that by now have proven their value.
