Summary
Treatment of anxiety disorder in later life
Elderly people suffering from anxiety disorders remain usually under diagnosed and undertreated. However, the burden of disease is substantial and comparable in both younger and older adults with anxiety disorders. Less than 14% of the older adults suffering from persistent, chronic anxiety is offered specialised mental health care treatment. Plausible explanations why late-life anxiety disorders remain untreated are discussed. Additionally, the available empirical evidence for the treatment of anxiety disorders in later life presented in four recently published meta-analyses is reviewed.
