Jaargang 2011 - Nummer 1 - dinsdag 4 november 2025

Summary

A treatise on the nocebo effect

Nocebo is the opposite of placebo, meaning that the expectation of negative outcome will facilitate a negative outcome. This phenomenon was studied in asthma, pain and medication. In psychotherapy little attention has been paid to nocebo. We describe two cases in which the nocebo phenomenon occurred and which measures the therapist took to oppose the harmful effects of negative expectations. Some suggestions are made to counteract nocebo in psychotherapy.
